As a pioneer in ÖKOPROFIT and PIUS projects, ZINQ has continuously invested in energy-efficient equipment and process technology – including high-efficiency burners, heat exchanger systems, frequency converters and LED lighting.

With microZINQ®, ZINQ begins developing resource-efficient surfaces. The thin-film batch galvanizing process saves up to 80% zinc compared with conventional batch galvanizing. In 2013, microZINQ® receives the German Raw Materials Efficiency Award.

ZINQ aligns its products and processes with the principles of the circular economy. Since 2010, a large part of ZINQ’s products has been Cradle to Cradle Certified® accordingly and designed for use in biological and technical cycles.

With Low Carbon ZINQ, the company begins gradually decarbonizing its processes. Measures include green electricity, electric forklifts, LED lighting, heat recovery and optimized process control.

duroZINQ® becomes ZINQ’s first batch galvanizing surface to be Cradle to Cradle Certified® for circularity and material health.

By processing zinc by-products on dedicated treatment lines, ZINQ closes internal material cycles. This marks the beginning of the ReZINQ project and the effort to close all material cycles.

At its Hagen site, ZINQ commissions a 7-meter plant for microZINQ®. This expands the technical possibilities of the thin-film batch galvanizing process.

As ZINQ’s second branded surface, microZINQ® is Cradle to Cradle Certified® for circularity and material health.

Together with partners, ZINQ launches a cooperation to decarbonize industrial process heat. The aim is to use hydrogen for process heat applications in a prototype at the Gelsenkirchen site.

ReZINQ combines Re-Use, Refurbish and Re-Manufacture with a take-back commitment. Steel and zinc are processed separately and returned to the cycles as recycled zinc.

ZINQ becomes a founding member of Klimahafen Gelsenkirchen, a cluster for decarbonizing industrial process heat. With Power2ZINQ, ZINQ is working on the prototype use of hydrogen.

The ZINQ CO₂ Bank is introduced. ZINQ calculates the emissions and savings of duroZINQ and microZINQ surfaces based on EPDs and credits the savings to customers as Carbon Credits.

With Low Carbon ZINQ, a strategy for decarbonizing surfaces is implemented. The Product Carbon Footprint is reduced through recycled zinc, CO₂-reduced primary zinc and efficiency measures.

This is where the future is being shaped. At the ZINQ Futurium, the ZINQ Technologie Research and Development Center, ZINQ Technologie brings together research, exchange and knowledge transfer.. Employees, customers, suppliers and political representatives jointly work on new solutions.

With seven electric cars currently in its fleet, ZINQ is continuing to expand electric mobility within its own fleet. This growing shift toward electrification is supported by a total of 78 charging stations at ZINQ locations, which are available for charging electric vehicles.

ZINQ introduces digital circular product passports across the supply chain. This creates transparent documentation of the circular quality of products and supports the implementation of the Sustainable Product Initiative.

ecoZINQ achieves improved CO₂ performance through the Low Carbon ZINQ program and CO₂-reduced primary zinc. Each tonne of steel saves 185 kg of CO₂ compared with high-quality coating systems.

Since 2024, ZINQ has been operating two electric trucks—in Gelsenkirchen and Landsberg. With this move, ZINQ has taken another step toward electrifying its own fleet. The two electric trucks are used for daily transportation at their respective locations.

microZINQ® is also considered for applications with increased fire protection requirements. This expands the range of applications for the zinc surface in safety-relevant construction projects.

ZINQ and ArcelorMittal extend the digital circular product passport to the construction sector. The aim is to increase transparency across the product life cycle and support the use of circular and CO₂-reduced materials.

Lars Baumgürtel and Dr. Birgitt Bendiek receive the German Environmental Award from the DBU for their contribution to a resource-efficient, circular industry and the long-standing work of ZINQ employees across Europe.
